Surviving Pandemics: The Little Things Make Big Differences: Tackling Inflammation
Have you heard of the latest health catchphrase? “Reduce inflammation!” You might be living with it and be unaware of how corrosive it is to daily health. A larger concern is that it can predispose the body to a “morbid condition” or disease. During pandemics, such as Covid-19, having one or more morbid conditions such as heart disease and diabetes can suddenly become the factors that jeopardizes one’s life.
First, what is it? Inflammation is the body’s response to an injury with redness, heat, fever, swelling and pain. These signs indicate that a pathogen or damaged cells need attention and in response, the body tells white blood cells where to focus their healing. Inflammation is not only caused by pathogens or injury, but also infections, stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, environmental toxins, a sedentary lifestyle, a reaction to medications as well as other factors. Unresolved inflammation prematurely wears down the body’s health. It is associated with cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory problems such as asthma, cancers, and other diseases. i
To address inflammation, particular white blood cells are directed to carry out specific tasks. Some fight against pathogens and cancer, others protect the body from mold and fungus, others yet clean up damaged cells. Once on site, white blood cells send chemical signals into the blood or surrounding tissue for the body’s protection. The signals are used to create various responses, such as causing a fever, or increasing blood flow to the injury or producing histamines which aid the body in ridding itself of allergens, such as sneezing or a runny nose.
An easy solution to bolstering the body’s white blood cell response is taking contrast showers regularly. A contrast shower is a cycle of one 3-minute hot shower followed up by 30 seconds of an ice-cold shower. Ideally, one “treatment” would encapsulate 5 cycles of hot/cold. The contrast shower increases the white blood cell activity in the body for several hours. ii During times of illness, this therapy may be used three to four times daily, with four hour breaks in between. If time permits, contrast showers should ideally be followed by a rest period.
Although there are many causes of inflammation, eating a less-processed, whole foods plant-based diet is one of the most effective solutions to restoring health. Vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds are medicinal in addition to the powerful nutrition they supply to the body. Simply put, food is the topmost factor that affects the body’s PH balance, multiple times daily. The effect of the quality of meals, snacks, smoothies, or other beverages is such that 24 hours is enough to create a positive or negative change in gut health, which in turn affects the immune system.iii Exercise, maintaining the body’s ideal weight, managing stress, and supporting good sleep hygiene are other key habits that reduce inflammation. Ultimately, keeping the body in good health enables it to be responsive to treatment and wellness during illness and pandemics.
