France Burns, Prophecy Fulfilling
France reaped in blood the harvest of her submission to Rome. Where France, under Romanism, had set up the first stake at the opening of the Reformation, there the Revolution set up its first guillotine. On the spot where the first martyrs to the Protestant faith were burned in the sixteenth century, the first victims were guillotined in the eighteenth. When the restraints of God’s law were cast aside, the nation swept on to revolt and anarchy. The war against the Bible stands in world history as the Reign of Terror. He who triumphed today was condemned tomorrow.
Ellen G. White
France is burning again.
Student protests which began September 18 escalated to hundreds of thousands demonstrating in Paris in October. Nearly 30,000 protesters occupied the Place de la Bastille on October 6, the location of the beginning of the original French Revolution. They clashed repeatedly with police, and thousands were arrested, mostly minors. The protests continued in coming days until they erupted into a full-blown riot on October 17 and 18 as up to 800,000 protesters across the country stormed the streets.
Stores were ransacked. Historic buildings burnt. Masked gangs of youths chanted “everyone hates the police”, and “We are storming the Bastille”, while looting luxury stores like Rolex, Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Luis Vuitton. At least 2400 people were arrested over 48 hours, but water canons and tear gas proved largely ineffective as the raging mobs comprised of students, union workers, and migrants, overwhelmed law enforcement. One resident summed up the feeling of French residents, and the world at large: it was "terrifying" to see groups of young people "smashing everything, with total impunity".1 Terrifying, indeed. A new “Reign of Terror”.

Millions around the world are asking “why”? The political spin doctors have their explanations ready: the left blames the right, and the right blames the left.
The rioters justify their looting because of poor school conditions and national financial mismanagement that sends billions for the failed war in Ukraine but can’t install air conditioning in public schools. The right blames Islamic immigrants and communists and anarchists, instead of their own corruption and greed. While the protests simmered on the eve of the October 17 blowup, President Macron and his wife were at a Celine Dion concert, dancing, evoking comparisons on social media to Nero playing his fiddle while Rome burned, or Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, both of whom were beheaded during the French Revolution.

There is only one way to make sense of it all. The Bible is true. Its prophecies are true. The fruits of the principles of the Beast from the Bottomless Pit in Revelation 11 are ripening, and the scenes of the French Revolution will be re-enacted on a worldwide scale. The whirlwind has been sewn, and it will be faithfully reaped. Students of Bible prophecy know what the media does not: that the unrest is another sign of the impending end of this world.
The riots are spreading, and the word of prophecy tell us they will continue to spread. Italy, Belgium, Spain. The UK. America. It will come. We are told that “the world-wide dissemination of the same teachings that led to the French Revolution—all are tending to involve the whole world in a struggle similar to that which convulsed France.”2 All of the violence and unrest will tend to push the western world toward a new order where church and state unite, and the events of Revelation 13 will be fulfilled.

The world has taught evolution as a fact for over a century. Public school children have grown up being told that there is no God. That there is no higher law. That there is no objective right or wrong, or higher moral law. And we see the sure result. Mobs of looters ransacking stores. Anarchy, theft and violence.
Wherever the divine precepts are rejected, sin ceases to appear sinful or righteousness desirable. Those who refuse to submit to the government of God are wholly unfitted to govern themselves. Through their pernicious teachings the spirit of insubordination is implanted in the hearts of children and youth, who are naturally impatient of control; and a lawless, licentious state of society results.3
The pen of inspiration over a hundred and fifty years ago accurately prophesied the events of today. Do the below quotes not stir your hearts, dear Reader, with the knowledge that we are on the final approach to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? What is more important than being ready?

It had been Rome’s policy, under a profession of reverence for the Bible, to keep it locked up in an unknown tongue, and hidden away from the people. Under her rule the witnesses prophesied, “clothed in sackcloth.” But another power—the beast from the bottomless pit—was to arise to make open, avowed war upon the Word of God.
The “great city” in whose streets the witnesses are slain, and where their dead bodies lie, “is spiritually Egypt.” Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt most boldly denied the existence of the living God, and resisted his commands. No monarch ever ventured upon more open and high-handed rebellion against the authority of Heaven than did the king of Egypt. When the message was brought him by Moses, in the name of the Lord, Pharaoh proudly answered, “Who is Jehovah, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, neither will I let Israel go.” [Exodus 5:2.] This is atheism; and the nation represented by Egypt would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God, and would manifest a like spirit of unbelief and defiance. The “great city” is also compared, “spiritually,” to Sodom. The corruption of Sodom in breaking the law of God was especially manifested in licentiousness. And this sin was also to be a pre-eminent characteristic of the nation that should fulfill the specifications of this scripture.
According to the words of the prophet, then, a little before the year 1798 some power of Satanic origin and character would rise to make war upon the Bible. And in the land where the testimony of God’s two witnesses should thus be silenced, there would be manifest the atheism of the Pharaoh, and the licentiousness of Sodom.
This prophecy has received a most exact and striking fulfillment in the history of France. During the Revolution of 1793, “the world for the first time heard an assembly of men, born and educated in civilization, and assuming the right to govern one of the finest European nations, uplift their united voice to deny the most solemn truth which man’s soul receives, and renounce unanimously the belief and worship of the Deity.” “France is the only nation in the world concerning which the authentic record survives, that as a nation she lifted her hand in open rebellion against the Author of the universe. Plenty of blasphemers, plenty of infidels, there have been, and still continue to be, in England, Germany, Spain, and elsewhere; but France stands apart in the world’s history as the single State which, by the decree of her legislative assembly, pronounced that there was no God, and of which the entire population of the capital, and a vast majority elsewhere, women as well as men, danced and sang with joy in accepting the announcement.”
France presented also the characteristic which especially distinguished Sodom. During the Revolution there was manifest a state of moral debasement and corruption similar to that which brought destruction upon the cities of the plain. And the historian presents together the atheism and licentiousness of France, as it is given in the prophecy: “Intimately connected with these laws affecting religion was that which reduced the union of marriage—the most sacred engagement which human beings can form, and the permanence of which leads most strongly to the consolidation of society—to a state of mere civil contract of a transitory character, which any two persons might engage in and cast loose at pleasure.... If fiends had set themselves at work to discover a mode of most effectually destroying whatever is venerable, graceful, or permanent in domestic life, and obtaining at the same time an assurance that the mischief which it was their object to create should be perpetuated from one generation to another, they could not have invented a more effectual plan than the degradation of marriage.... Sophie Arnoult, an actress famous for the witty things she said, described the republican marriage as the ‘sacrament of adultery.’”
“Where also our Lord was crucified.” This specification of the prophecy was also fulfilled by France. In no land had the spirit of enmity against Christ been more strikingly displayed. In no country had the truth encountered more bitter and cruel opposition. In the persecution which France had visited upon the confessors of the gospel, she had crucified Christ in the person of his disciples. – Great Controversy, Ellen G. White, 1888 edition, pp. 269.1-271.1

At the same time anarchy is seeking to sweep away all law, not only divine, but human. The centralizing of wealth and power; the vast combinations for the enriching of the few at the expense of the many; the combinations of the poorer classes for the defense of their interests and claims; the spirit of unrest, of riot and bloodshed; the world-wide dissemination of the same teachings that led to the French Revolution—all are tending to involve the whole world in a struggle similar to that which convulsed France. – Education, Ellen G. White, p. 228.2

It would be far more consistent for nations to abolish their statutes, and permit the people to do as they please, than for the Ruler of the universe to annul His law, and leave the world without a standard to condemn the guilty or justify the obedient. Would we know the result of making void the law of God? The experiment has been tried. Terrible were the scenes enacted in France when atheism became the controlling power. It was then demonstrated to the world that to throw off the restraints which God has imposed is to accept the rule of the cruelest of tyrants. When the standard of righteousness is set aside, the way is open for the prince of evil to establish his power in the earth.
Wherever the divine precepts are rejected, sin ceases to appear sinful or righteousness desirable. Those who refuse to submit to the government of God are wholly unfitted to govern themselves. Through their pernicious teachings the spirit of insubordination is implanted in the hearts of children and youth, who are naturally impatient of control; and a lawless, licentious state of society results. While scoffing at the credulity of those who obey the requirements of God, the multitudes eagerly accept the delusions of Satan. They give the rein to lust and practice the sins which have called down judgments upon the heathen. Darkness Before Dawn, Ellen G. White, pp. 29.3-DD 30.1
